Bluetooth GPS receivers
Has anyone got one? Any recommendations? Any to avoid?
I'm looking for one to use with my Orange SPV M5000 PDA and Memory Map V5 so that I can use it like a SatNav for walking on OS maps.
Actually what I really want it for is to make a note of really good spectating spots we find whilst out and about on rallies
Cheers
Sal

Yeah I've read a couple of reviews which recommend Sirf III - I've been looking at a solar powered one and have this one in mind so far but I hate buying gizmos without doing days and days of research first. Trouble is I need it quick.

I had the Polstar one 2yrs ago which was sooooo sloooow I used to put in on the roof to get a signal and guess what .....yup drove off one day with it still on there...doh, never saw it again
I then got this one which is loads better and battery lasts for ever, but it was a while back. I use it on a SPV.

Holux seem to be a good make. Mine is an older model and one charge lasts about 18hrs so it's claimed. easily enough for a full day out. It also picks up the signal really well even if it's in the glove box for example.

Nick, I was just looking at that very one on Ebay then came back to this thread to find that you'd posted it
I'm liking the idea of being able to put the unit in the top pocket of my rucksack (or glovebox) Maybe I don't need to bother about a solar powered one if they last 18 hours?

Used it in a coat pocket and rucksack fine when walking / cycling but not sure I would put it in the glovebox while driving - much better by your speedo or on the dash. You can also plug in an ext antenna but ive never needed one.

Beware the Holux GPSlim 236. They have a known weakpoint where the bluetooth stops working. I'm on my second unit, and BT has died again. There is a workaround that involves a piece of rubber wedged in the case, and that seems to have cured it for now
Would personally recommend that you avoid this particular model though.

I'm poised on the brink of ordering a GlobalSat BT 338 for £59.99 + £7.99 P&P from Ebay (it has the 3.1.1 firmware and a free PDA/phone holder). I just can't quite commit to it yet

I've just found the GLOBALSAT BT-359 for the same price, urgh, what should I do? Strangely I prefer the look of the older model 338 but is the new one better?
