Sony claims it's something to do with protecting their trademarks in other countries, plus the normal BS of "safety" (Lik-Sang sent out PSP with CE marked power supplies, so that should not be an issue) and the mention of it not playing europe encoded blu-ray discs.
We all know it's really about money, and how Sony can get away with charging more in Europe than in Japan.
The thing that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth is that Lik-san mentions a fair few SCEE executives who used them (Lik-sang) to import PSP's before they were officially released in europe.

As much as this is a bummer, put yourselves in their situation. If you were running a business, and a third party was undercutting your market by providing cheaper non-local stock, you'd want to shut it down too to maintain higher revenue. It's business pure and simple.
The car manufacturers tried to exactly the same thing by rubbishing grey import goods and threatening dealers who would service and maintain them.
Vote with your feet, and hit them where it hurts, in their pockets, by buying non-Sony produce (now certain among you wouldn't have expected me to say that )

Sony are just killing their non Japanese customer loyalty. They can go and shove the PS3 up their ar$e and I think lots of other Sony customers are increasingly thinking the same outside of Japan. They can have the Japanese market as I am sure Microsoft are happy to concede but the rest of the World is going to Microsoft for their gaming needs.
Gran Turismo (the lack of it) for the PSP just about sums Sony up at the moment, a total joke.
