Default Help with wireless signal?

My daughter has at last got a broadband feed into her student house in Bristol. Trouble is she is on the 3rd floor of an old building and she can't get her wireless broadband up and running. I don't use a wireless version myself so I am a bit in the dark on this. I think main signal box is in the lounge on ground floor and I am guessing that signal is too weak 2 floors up. Can she get some sort of signal booster? All suggestions welcome. TIA. David

Just spoke to my gal who is with Telewest btw who provided the signal box. My daughter says she has something called an Airplus GPlus Router made by D-Link.

Is this any help? Sorry if it's not what you were asking

I know you can get extenders and boosters for D Link routers.
Here is the list. Without the model number I can't be specific but it should lead you in the right direction.

As a similar price alternative to a wireless extender is to look at PowerLine networking David. It uses the household mains circuits to make a network.

If you're just sharing an Internet connection, then the low cost 14Mbps kit would be fine. For instance, NetGear:

PowerLine Wall-Plugged Ethernet Bridge - XE102

You'd plug one bridge in by the router downstairs and link it to the router with a CAT5 network cable. Then put the other bridge upstairs by the PC and again like with a CAT5 lead.

There's a good review of some of the faster versions here:

HEXUS.lifestyle : Review : devolo MicroLink dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit : Page - 1/9

Clearly, there's a lot of reviewing still to do but after going hands-on with the devolo kit, we're convinced that HomePlug does offer significant advantages over Ethernet and WiFi - not least of which is its astonishing ease of use compared with WiFi.

Thanks guys. Will pass on all info.

Don't think she'll want to move as it's nice and warm on the top floor

ChrisB - I meant to ask - if she goes the mains circuit route does that mean that other users can still surf? I guess they would stay with the wireless option?

Need I be worried that because it's an old house there may be more than one mains circuit? Thanks, David

No problems with others surfing, just one at the router plugged into a switch port on the router (and the wall) another (or several) at the other end in the room of choice.

Works really well and can go upto 200Meg depending on which one you buy.
Devolo have a 14 meg one as well.
