Red face When did you last test your backup tapes???

A member or our IT team had a bit of a purge of old user accounts last night and he removed a few current users as well!!!!

I've spent this morning restoring AD accounts and Exchange mailboxes. This got me into think, when did you last test your DR/backup plans.

I test our backups monthly (when our month end tape finishes before it gos off site) and our DR tests are being done next week.

My mum works for a charity and their resident IT bod wrote his own package which he flogged to another company, he has now managed to lose 2 months worth of data and then claimed it only gets backed up once every three months ????????

I am dying to go in and tear the ******* system to bits as he has been dead condescending to my mum who has had to spend her weekends typing it in again.

Bet its written in fookin Access.

Am I correct in thinking that VSC only back's up files\folders and not AD, SQL etc.

And what a godsend it is, I seem to use it daily as our engineers are always 'accidentally' deleting DWG files Not had to use a backup tape for months ( touch wood )

Tape backups however are tested monthly..

vss is good so long as you have the space..

VSS does work with SQL afaik.. but SnapManager for SQL is

I wouldnt try restoring AD with vss..

you can however use NetIQ DRA which creates a recycle bin in AD

Basically an OU and deletes get moved into the OU.

Can anyone recommend a simple home backup solution ?

I want one that will backup all changed and added files to a separate removeable device from selected directories. I want the backup files to be the same as the source, not a single backup file, so that the files can be easily read on another device with no additional software required.

As David_Wallis says above, Netapp Snapmanager (for Exchange) is an awesome bit of software for recovering emails or full mailboxes.

Cant wait for the full release of Snapmanager for Oracle on Solaris tho.....that will sort out some of my customers backup problems !!
