Default Remote Teaching / conferencing with OSX..

...I understand that Leopard has built in iChat AV that can cope with this, using some kind of remote desktop client/server setup.

Anyone any info on the technology behind this? - will it tunnel out past routers, etc, or is there the arsey setup of port forwarding before it will work.

Ideally I'm wanting to display Keynote presentations across the net, but wondered if this was what I need.... or are there any other alternatives?

From what I saw in the keynote, iChat Theater is what you are talking about. The first build of 10.5 seeded to developers did contain some remote connection thing but we could not get it to work. Even after applying the available software update patches for the build it did not work. Perhaps we were not doing something correctly.

A later build of 10.5 was released last week but at present I do not have it, so I cannot comment on whether this functionality now works.

Ignoring 10.5 for the moment you could always use a combination of iChat and ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) or VNC. iChat would handle the audio side of things (or even a video chat if you wanted that as well) whereas ARD/VNC would allow you to share your screen with others.

I'm not sure how scalable ARD actually is though. I know one version of it would not operate over subnets, but I think the latest version overcomes that limitation.

Rich,
I totally forgot about Timbuktu. Have used it in the past and it's very good.

BuRR,
I found this (Xmeeting) which might be useful, though I've not used it. As for 10.5, the release date is not fixed as yet, but it's rumored to be around spring 2007. I expect that the Macworld in Jan 2007 will give us the final release date, plus reveal the "top secret" features Steve was on about. This would give developers time to integrate their products with them, if need be.

Leopard iChat AV does seem t onegate the need for TB2 though sadly.
They offer a trial version download from their site.

Dan,
I found this, which is a comparison of Timbuktu vs ARD.

ahh, fair enough - will stick with ARD as it's much more potent then
Still, a good product if it comes bundled with 10.5
