Question Is it possible to change a modem or speed ?

I will try to explain.

I have an AppleMac imac G4, OS Tiger 10.4 connected via BT Broadband and external BT 56k modem.( Voyager 100 ). I believe the the imac has a built in 56k modem but this is bypassed by the external one. ( ? )
Is it possible to get a quicker modem to work with the imac ? I believe that the next one is a 112k or a 256k ( ? ) so if BT will sell me one, will it make downloads any quicker ? Is this possible ?

Hope that this makes sense.

Thanks

not being funny or anything, but if you have broadband, then why are mentioning modems...yes the usb modem is a modem technically, but it connects at the speed of your service..dosent matter about the mac;s built in modem cos you are not using that one???

or am i missing something?

No, it's me who has a very limited understanding of how these things operate !

So the download speeds are determined by the broadband connection speed ? and the modem unit is just a connection device and has no effect on speed ?

correct....

the modems that we all used to know and love are classed as dial up..
i.e as in they dialed up at speeds of up to 56k and made those funny little noises

the modems inside ADSL modems or routers, are essentially still modems, however they simply make the connection and the true speed you get is determined by the ADSL or broadband connection you have.

so it dosent matter if you have a mac or pc, usb modem or router, if you have a 1MB service, you should get 1MB..simple eh

Thank you , now I understand.

I shall contact BT and see if an improvement is available for my line.

Cheers

Mb not MB - there is an important difference

8Mb = 1MB - just so you don't go buying a 1meg service and wonder why you download at a absolute maximum of 125KB per second.

Actually Mb and MB might still counfound some people.

You have a file on your hard disc which is measured in megaBYTES
You have an internet connection speed measures in megaBITS.
There are 8 BITS to a BYTE.

My statement from BT says

"BTBroadband 2Mb 20GB MPP "

I ran a speed test and got ....

Broadband Speed Test Results

Results from broadband speed test recorded on Thursday, 05 October 2006, 23:44.
Your Connection

Speed Test Results
Downstream 1,866.3 Kbps ( = 1.8 Mbps )
Upstream 239.3 Kbps ( = 0.2 Mbps )

So it looks like the line is working OK as it is close to the 2Mb.

Is this 2Mb a good rate ? ie is it fast-slow, how does it compare to what is available ?

Sorry for so many questions, but if I don't know then I have to ask.

Thanks

the tests mesures the true speed /rate but you have to remember that your modem and the equip in exch talk to each other all the time this makes up the rest
