Question External hard drive info & recommendations please

Hi - We've not really backed up our computer stuff much so far - not really had much important stuff on it.

My wife is starting a project that will need to be kept secure and must not be lost so i started messing about with backing up data.

I am now coming to the conclusion that an external hard drive may be the best option. I want to store backups of personal data and copies of media files etc and also be able to have available in a portable form large files that could then be accessed by connecting to any PC...

Any Pros & Cons to my idea? - any suggestions & advice appreciated - also on security of data, maybe just specific files or folders...

Thanks

Mick

it has a separate power supply, like a laptop.

I have a Maxtor thing, been fine for 3 years.

You will still need to backup to CD/DVD if poss though, as a power surge could take the whole lot down, as happened on my last system.
