Default Large hard drive problem

I have just installed a second hard drive (Seagate barracuda 500gb) into my system but the computer only sees it as a 127gb drive, it's a oldish system (5 years old) but the Asus BIOS will accept large drives and i'm running XP with SP2.

Could anyone help please as it driving me mad

Thanks
Ian

Hello

When you are saying you are running SP2, did you install it with that on the CD? The original (non SP'd) version of Windows only accepted drives up to 127gb.

So you can now either have a separate drive (and add the partition from "Computer Management"/"Disk Management") or using something like partition magic to create one big volume.

Make sure you have all service packs for Windows XP installed & download the 48bitLBA fix to enable large drive support.

Maybe worth checking that you don't have a jumper set on the drive to make it identifyable for older PCs. Also check the manufacturer of you're PC/Motherboard for any BIOS updates that maybe needed so that you can connect larger Hard drives.

OK here goes
It's the original windows XP with SP1 & SP2 installed as they became available
The BIOS it the most up to date version which is suitable for large drives
I've tried the 48bitLBA fix and it's telling me it is already enabled

After all this windows Computer Management / Disk Management is still telling me i have a 127gb drive
If i install a friends maxtor 250gb hard drive it is seen straight away at the correct gb

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP

Hello

Okay .... but if you go to the Disk Management there should be unpartitioned space of 128gb. You then create another logical drive and format this partition.

Have you tried deleting all the partitions and then making the whole drive a one "basic" partition.
