Upgrading Ram
Trying to make my computer a bit faster without changing the motherboard.
I have a pentium 4 2.8ghz with 512mb of ram. Its a Packard Bell.
I purchased a 1gb of ram last night & changed 1 x 256mb ram last night.
The applications i was using were a lot faster so i am going to purchase another 1gb today.
Apart from doing a fresh install (already done) is there much else i can do to make this a bit faster ??
Also is there any bad points about upgrading Ram.
Thanks

iirc, the CL type dictates the speed/latency, the lower the better. You'll not really notice it.
the benefit of ram is to avoid windows paging memory to and from disk when the running apps require more memory than you have. disks are way slow compared to ram, so having enough to avoid paging is the biggest benefit.
depending on what you're running an extra gig might not make any difference.
if it's cheap tho, go for it

£70.
I noticed a big difference when playing FM2006 last night, recommended leagues had increased tenfold & it was a lot quicker processing games.

FM2006 loves memory, I got a improvement when I went from 1 gb to 2 gb although that included a change to processor and mobo so I dont know how much the memory contributed to that.
Do a google search on XP services, you will find sites that will tell you what services are safe to be disabled. May not gain you a lot but every little helps, also programs that run automatically at start up, if you dont really need them, then disable them from starting up. (obviously leave virus checker firewall etc)
