PC keeps switchin off
Anyone got any ideas ?
My PC keeps switching itself off for no reason, seems like no power, try and start it up again and if fires up briefly but then switches itself off again, have to leave it for a while and then its fine.
Me thinks it may be a dodgy power supply ??
Any one got any thoughts pls
Cheers

yeah I thought that at first because it was happening in the really hot weather, and after i had left it on for literally days at an end, but now i can switch it on for a couple of hours and it will start doing it - i have also moved it out from the wall so air can get around it ??

If you have certain settings on, ie your GFX card could have a setting to turn off if the chip reached a certain temp.
This goes for most components in a PC.
It could, sit down, sat? ... be your processor or if your in luck the PSU or mobo. Not much to replace, but if your not skilled then it could cost you abit of £££
it could just be a heat conductivity problem.
IF your skilled with comps then open it up and look for signs of burnt chips on the mobo or any joining wires.

If when you switch on it gets into Windows & then conks - then you need a new PSU - get a good brand like Enermax. If it conks before the PC even POSTs, then it could be a different issue.

Thanks Guys,
it dies before it gets to Windows, about 2 secs after pressing the on button.
Its a relatively new CPU, P4 3.0, and motherboard for that fact, may try replacing the PSU and see if that makes any difference.

Could be the cpu over heating and cutting out to protect itself.
If you can get into the bios see if there is a section that shows curent running temps(most mobo's have them) and see what they are at

Hi,
It might be worth checking that the power switch isn't shhorting out. I had this on a PC recently. With ATX power supplies if you press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds the pc will power off. The problem I came across had one of the power switch leads shorted to the case so if you touched the chassis sometimes the PC would just switch off and when you turned it on it would turn off after about 2 seconds. Might be worth a butchers before splashing any cash on it!
