Post IT contracting

Hi Guys,

Looks like I may be stepping out(pushed) of the permie world soon and was thinking about contracting, how are the IT contractors on here finding the current market,???

My main skills are - 15 years technical experience using Windows nt-2003 administration, building, rebuilding, upgrading, decommissioning, Technical Consultancy, HP server hardware, working within a change control enviroment etc

Thanks guys...

wow £100 an hour!!

I thought our contractors are over paid, they earn between £30 - 60 an hour. Their on a months notice but have worked for the company for over 5 years. I'm 1 of the few pemies and I earn half they do. Very annnoying when your both doing the same job.

when i do a contract search, i specify "c++ c# vb credit derivatives swaps central london"

for the number of swap types i author for (about 15), it's £800-1000 a day.

So where is the value based? Is it in the coding ability or in the knowledge of derivatives etc?

credit derivatives and swaps

c++ c# and vb only gets you 5-600 a day (in central london - I never earned more than 500pd outside of london)

Even more so if you can code (properly) as well.

There is a big article about contract rates in thsi weeks Computer Weekly. It said Contract Jobs are on the decline. Apparently there has been a 12.7% drop in the last quarter.

I can believe that - I work for one of the UK's larger technology consultancy houses. We are in the process of getting rid of our contractors and replacing them with permys. Mind you there are still plenty of contractors around the office at the moment....

The market I am in is pretty good at the moment, for volume of jobs available, however I am having to work for £700 per day at the moment, rates used to be around the £1200 mark. It's all swings and roundabouts, when the next new thing comes along I will be ahead of the game, trained up, ready to bs and charging £1200 per day again

If you want the best rates, a general support of dev role will never pay as well as something more specialised like ERP etc. I need to specialise I think

I actually work with the SAP Netweaver toolset, based around 7+ years experience with SAP Business Warehouse. SAP BW rates are dropping, but people will still pay for the correct experience. It's all the new stuff like BPS, Enterprice Portal, Knowledge Management etc......tha's where the money will be at

Yep I moved from dev into ERP consultancy (sage line 500 not SAP) but SAP has always been the daddy as far as rates go but yes dev rates have remained fairly static. I know a c# guy in london getting about 50 an hour but I think most .net devs are in the 35/40hr bracket.

I'm on more than that and I work from home most of the time The good thing about being a general dev is there'll always be work out there.
