I think the best ones for detection are the Microsoft one and Spyware doctor, I use the latter. Other ones worth a mention off the top of my head are spybot and ad-aware. There are loads around now though

Windows Defender:

It's free but you must install the genuine validation tool to progress your download.

I've used both Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Adware Personal and found them to be very reliable at detecting and removing evil things if they happen to get on my machine.
Both are free, but can be upgraded to paid for versions if you so wish.
I also run ZoneAlarm Pro, which not only stops unwanted access to my machine (it's a software firewall), but it also has built in spyware detection as well, so if Spybot and Ad-Adware miss it, this will usually pick it up.
With the above I tend not to get too many nasties on my machine, unless I'm foolish and visiting dodgy sites, or downloading dodgy software, but anything I have come across, these programs, along with Solo Antivirus removes quite happily.
