Default Learning CSS and HTML

I'm starting to build my self a website as a little project.

So far I've used HTML coding but really want to have a little play with CSS to get a consistant layout across all the pages.

Are there any decent books or websites to have a look at?

I will be using dreamweaver when it arrives *cough* but I'm using Notepad at the moment

dreamweaver is a good editor but I strongly recommend learning the raw HTML/CSS, it will help you massively in the long run.
Notepad is not that great though, wordpad might be better but there should be plenty of free HTML editors around.

http://www.webmonkey.com is a good starter.

Looking at how other good sites do it is a good way of learning it too.

Avoid tables if you can and I would say avoid absolute positioning.

Try and have a project to build to give you some focus.

look at a server side technology so you can reuse code. I use php/mysql but asp/access or mysql can be just as easy. Depends on your hardware.
Or look at SSI (server side includes - .shtml)

As Rich says, learning to write raw code is very helpful.

That way you won't pick up any bad habits when you have Dreamweaver (or Frontpage - eek!) write the code for you.

In fact, AVOID FRONTPAGE, or I'll have to come over and beat you like a ginger step-child.

I have not even got Frontpage installed as I have seen the websites that it creates

I just validated what little there is of my site and it found 28 errors. I am going to start again.

I have my planned layout of the site on paper, just got to get to work now on getting it onto the monitor.

I could just stick the paper layout onto the monitor

Thanks guys. Are there any good books you would recommend?

Check out the examples:
