Default Server monitoring

What do you use for your Server monitoring?

I'm currently looking at MOM and it is quite mind boggling.

Looking at possibly 50+ servers. And possibly other network devices, switches, routers etc. but this is less likely.

You might want to consider Solarwinds - it's modular so you can add in whatever bits you want to if you wish to monitor more than just servers.

http://www.asl-solarwinds.co.uk/?gcl...FQa2QgodNRCy6A

If configured correctly, it can show you a pretty accurate network map - we have a polling screen (on a 60" plasma) running through the 4 main CAT's we have as the core of the network - it then shows the main routers hanging off them and you can quickly see where there is a possible fault.

I use SNIPS, perl based and pluggable, monitors in the region of 30,000 hosts quite happily with alerting, rrdtool graphing, all the usual stuff. It's open source, so YMMV for installation and use.

Thanks guys.

You both sound like you are running on a much larger scaler than me.

Not that big... 180 Servers and 4500 end users (3 Server support guys, 3 Server project guys, 3 Comms guys - not big at all)

MOM isnt too bad, you need to spend a bit of time with the configuration.

at my last place we used NetIQ AppManager which was pretty good too.

You could go overkill with Tivoli

There are aslo some freebee linux offerings

comparing solarwinds and MOM is like comparing a car to a conservatory.

We use BMC Patrol....

I looked at changing to MOM about a year ago.

Maybe a little overkill for what you want.
