We now have wireless office () and my kids have there own lappy to access the net.

i connect via a cable to to the router, the lappy is wireless to the router..

how do i prevent the lappy from viewing files and apps on my (office pc)??

we have all our workstuff and docs on ther, and dont want the kids looking round..

Dont share any files

put the windows service pack 2 firewall on, on exceptions list, untick file and print sharing

Password all user accounts, and dont tell the kids the passwords

Does your router have the feature to isolate the wireless clients from LAN clients

another way could be to take off file and print sharing from the network adapter, control panel, network connections, right click Local Area Connection and select properties, un tick file and print sharing for microsoft networks

I hope you have secured the wireless side of the router? As I have come across someone who hasn't in the street where I live. And I can logon to his/her router without a password and surf off their internet connection.

yeah defo, good article in PCW about this, this month. Guy goes around the world, uses net and didn't pay for it once jumping on other peoples connections. For research of course

I know some people who cancelled their service as they use next doors WEP is OK but WPA is better, as Chris said try unsecure then encrypt with the best method your router allows.

The best way to disable sharing on your PC is by the following:

Add a registry entry to disable all shares. Even if you do not create any shares, the $ shares (admin$, system$) are still active.
The key is HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserve r\parameters\
Create a 'DWORD' called 'AutoShareWks' with value of '0'

do i do this on the main pc or the lappy???

i did the disable file sharing on the lappy, and it wouldnt access the net...

although i,m not to sure which connection i should have disabled,

on the one adaptor i have the follwing listed


client for ms networks

file and printer sharing for ms networks

qos packet schedules

internet protocols tcp/ip


bearing in mind this is on the main pc, so i guess i untick the file and printer sharing tab...

tried it on the lappy and it wouldnt connect...


also you say encrypting the lappy, ive found a problem... if i try to run the network setup wizard from the lapy it makes me enter a flash card, then says ive got to plug it into the main pc or router to update it...

it wont let me run the networks wizard, as it reckons another program has done it, (one on main pc) and it must do the setup on the lappy, now do i run the router setup proggy on the lappy, or do i just try to do something from the pc end?? bearing in mind the pc dosent appear files wise

That was a while ago, I did a quick follow up test on my home town and the ratio of encrypted/open was the same but the numbers had doubled!

ISP's are getting the idea now, I know at least one Dutch ISP who provides a wireless router with encryption enabled out of the box, the WEP key is on the bottom of the router. A UK ISP is about to launch the same system but using WPA. This ISP is really going to town with pre-configuration, you can't configure a thing on the router and you can't use your own, the only instructions needed are identifying what plugs in where.

You would need to add the registry entry on your PC. If you add it and your Internet stops again, just go back in and delete it.

It might be over kill for your needs as it blocks ALL shares from your PC. i.e. printers, $ shares etc.

Yeah the windows firewall will block file sharing (137,138,139 and 445 TCP) if the exception is unticked, standard config i believe will allow subnet only. That should be enough. $ shares (XP Pro only) only work with admin rights to the machine and would be blocked by the firewall rules

$ shares work on 2000 and NT4 as well and you are correct, they require admin rights as they are admin shares.

LOL yes but my point is i may have complicated things on my first post when i didn't need to. Just tell the kids the computer can detect kids trying to connect to it
