Talking Transfering cd's to my hard drive

I have just bought a 320Gb external hard drive and want to store some of my beloved cd collection to it [in case of damage etc.]. Anyone suggest the quickest and most effective way of doing this.

If its compressed storage i.e. MP3, then you need an MP3 ripper program.

If its uncompressed WAV files then its a simple drag and drop from CD to hard drive directory.

I thought audio files on a CD were AIFF rather than WAV? Or when you D&D a CD to the drive does windows convert them to something else?

MP3 might be worthwhile if you in car player/dvd player/cd player can handle MP3 cd's. In which case an MP3 encoder would be good, If you want something free and simple to use, you could try iTunes. You may well need to change the default import options as it might use AAC rather than MP3 by default.

Why not just import them with iTunes, does the whole c.d automatically and does the track/album names for you....

thats how i've backed up most of my c.ds, and trust me, i have alot!

I think they are titled as .CDA but these are just shortcuts. WAV is just what XP converts to at 1024kbs IIRC as markus rightly mentions.

WMP 10 will do the job, oh and it will also download the disk info off the net while it's at it
