Default Connecting a Dell laptop to the net

I've just got my Dell laptop out the box and thought I'd have a little play with it.

I'm with cable on a broadband modem but for the life of me, I cant work out how to connect to the internet

Any ideas or suggestions in how to kick start it off, pretty please

**I forgot to mention that I connect via the net through usb**

Obviously you need to connect the modem to the laptop, which I'm guessing you have done and it's not allowed you access. What you will probably need to do is power the modem off and then on. The cable modem I used to have would record the MAC (network card) adress and only allow the device with that address to access the internet, so if I swapped machines I'd need to turn the modem off and back on.
