Default Thinking of a home network, any advice?

We currently have a pc in the office, main use surrfing & online gaming, plus music and films ... its the main pc (used by me)

now wifey wants to do her web boards as well, but 2 into 1 dont always work..

i have a second pc that i could utilise for another room, but not sure of the best option, and it means its a fixed installation...

wifeys thought () is a laptop and i have to admit it sounds ok,

question is what do i need to set up a (presumably) wireless network, and will it affect my online gaming / surfing if she,s using it at the same time as me.

andhow do we prevent access to the main pc from my 'youngers' if there networked??

If my cells are working, i guess it would be some form of wireless network, and this would be a card in my pc and one in the lappy??

how easy are they to set up?? and is there a basic spec lappy i should be going for?

my budget for the lappy is cheap, bearing in mind its only going to be used for surfing and the odd d/load,

no games at the mo

Piece of cake to set up.

Wireless card or usb stick for the main PC. Wireless adapter for the lappy.

Put on Internet Connection Sharing on the main PC, and bob's your uncle.

Security-wise, just make sure that you've got a WEP/WPA password to input each time the lappy has to be used.

The other way is a bit of future-proofing.

A 4-port ADSL router with built-in wireless (about £60 from PC-world)

the 4-ports connect -

1 ethernet to your main PC.
3 x to future PCs/Macs/XBoxes/PS2/3 etc.......

This box means that you don't need to have the main pc on when using the other items.

I've got this setup for my PC, studio Mac, PowerBook/PDA and XBox360.....

works a treat

either built-in wireless + Ethernet. Otherwise, something like this -
