Do external hard drives need their own power supply
Bit of a computer newbie im afraid, but i saw a 320 Gb external hard drive advertised in PC world for £109.99.
I may get this for may laptop purely to store films etc, will it need its own power supply or does it take it from the laptop.
Cheers

It will definitely need an external power supply. The only drives that you can run off laptop power are the smaller 2.5" ones which max out at 120GB and even then your laptop may not have enough power.

I run my laptop off the mains 90% of the time, and if i was to use it on the go i would make sure all i needed was on the internal hardrive.
Like i say it will be mostly for a film library

I have a 40GB external hard drive which runs off the usb. It does not need another power supply. 40GB is easy enough. Have you not thought about upgrading your internal hardrive?

I have had laptops for years and they are plugged in 99% of the time and the batteries are fine. Maybe in days of Olde when laptop batteries where crap but modern Ni-MH or Li-On batteries are much better.
Which computer shop was this, just so I know to avoid it

New generation of batteries don't have this issue.
Besides I would have thought newer laptop power management would stop charging a full battery.

Would this affect the warranty for the machine.
Sorry if these are stupid questions

To give you an idea on prices:

Wouldn't have thought it would invalidate your warranty. Most Laptops have access to the harddrive underneath via a panel.
