a DLL is dynamically linked library. Linking is done at runtime, which is called dynamic linking. Since the linking is done at runtime, it is obvious that the operating system will have something to do with it. That is why most DLL implementations are non-portable. When a compiled executable that references a DLL is loaded, the OS looks into the file and sees that the executable references a set of "imports" from a DLL file. This is simply a situation equivalent to finding that "This program uses the following functions which are contained in this dll". The OS then looks into the particular DLL. The DLL has a corresponding and matching set of export functions that the OS then maps from the functions referenced in the main executable to the functions in the DLL. Thus, when the executable calls a referenced function, the code in the DLL is executed.

ie other programs need em to work

Come on Dave, it's Mike and a computer, you just know it isn't going to be easy

ikernel.exe is the install shield kernel program (AFAIK). You sure your CD image that you burnt (allegedly) has copied correctly?

Like I know

Alright, Alright, I downloaded some stuff from Bear Share, it's a game that seems to have started life as a two disc offering. Usually whoever has hosted the software has alraedy sorted all this crap out so it's a case of download, open zip file, click install or exe and bosch....... game starts, this one didn't so normally I just delete them cos I don't know how to open them, this time I thought i'd give it a whirl.
So there you have it. Gridlock Mikey is an Internet Pirate Despite Scoobynet not condoning this behaviour I still thought i'd come on here and ask some old boffinous mates if they knew how to do it.
It's cheaper than phoning them
