how do i get the MAC address of a remote pc?

ipconfig /all on the p.c. or ping it from yours and check your ARP cache (arp -a)

found it in the addresses.

need to reserve the ip. created a reservation so now along with the original one, my one says reservation(inactive) dhcp (none) - that doesnt sound right - surely there should only be one, active & dhcp yes

You need to release and renew a DHCP lease on the client. Make sure the MAC is right and it's talking to the correct DHCP server!
