If you are using a 2k3 domain (active directory) don't discount folder re-direction either

we migrated to AD. at the moment, we are using local profiles and using NT groups to install apps, etc. just need to read up on the pro and cons of both profiles.

Roaming = bloody huge files being loaded whenever someone logs on and require LOTS of disk space
Local = no ability to get 'normal' desktop at another p.c.
Go for a Fixed working environment and sod them

I suppose it depends on what your business requires.
Domain policies can be used to control parts of the users local environment..
but that wasnt your question was it.
Pro's
Users can log into any pc and their desktop will be the more or less the same.
and after the first login, will be quicker subsequent times.
Dont have to set up mapped drives again, to shared areas
IIRC networked printers are mapped as well ( makes things easier)
cons
require server storage space
make sure correct permissions are applied
slight management overhead ( not too bad though)
If you deploy roaming you have exclusion options.
As a preference I would exclude the temp internet files and temp directory.
And also repoint the "my documents" folder somewhere else..there's no real need for it in a corporate environment.
ie their home drive... or just disable it.
Also stop people placing data on their desktops...make them use their home drive..or proper shared area.
If people get corrupted profiles...they always moan when u create a new one and say where's that file / folder from my desktop gone !!!
keeping the roaming profile a "slim" as possible will make for quick logons...
and less used server storage.
They will always moan about not being able to do this or that... but it is just the culture of what they are used to, and will get over it.
At the end of the day, all their profile **** ups have to be sorted by you..
so make your life easier and lessen the IT overheads.
Have a nice day

we used to use 1 mandatory profile for ALL 9000 users... No other config could touch this, there were some fancy scripts to do the rest though..
Ive tried most other things, personally I would avoid offline files like I would avoid Lotus software.
Profile decision should be made when you know what you want on the desktop, ie If its going to be setup properly then the users shouldnt be 'changing' anything other than 'recent docs' in the profile... everything else should be server based, especially if they want it backing up.
Oh so true..
When you ask them why they want to change the wallpaper and why it will help them do there job they tend to stop.

But then they all become mindless drones with no sense of individualism on their ickle PC. You might as well shave all their heads and make them wear uniforms while you're at it
