Default Laptop throwing up many a 'blue screen' error

Over the past four days, or so, my Sony VAIO laptop (PCG-K215M) has been throwing up several 'blue screen' errors.

This morning, it was giving 'Win32k.sys' as the culpret.

A second ago, I was given the following:

"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

STOP : 0x000000D1 (0x00800058, 0x0000001A, 0x00000001, 0xF7774FC6)

i8042prt.sys - Address F774fc6 base at 776D000, Datestamp 41107ecc"

Following a further restart, I was given more or less the same, but relating to 'USBPort.sys'.

Help?!

Either 2 things.

RAM or Hard drive failing.

I take it the Hard Drive sounds healthy?

Have you tried downloading a memtester, and booting up form Floppy disk to test your ram? I Know microsoft do a free one for download.

The hard drive sounds fine.

I've been considering a complete system restore, as I managed to back-up the majority of important files.

Would such fix the system, or is it more likely to be hardware related?

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is a tricky one to diagnose, as it can be due to a hardware OR software failure. I would def put your restore image back in, if it still doesnt work then you can start looking at the hardware, as said RAM, power or harddrive are most likely.

Well the only way to find out is to download this
http://www.memtest86.com/

and give it a try.

Had a similair problem with my Dell laptop with the same thing after installing SP2. Needed SP2 cos of the security updates and carried on time and time again.

In the end removed XP and installed 2000 Pro and its been perfect ever since.

Have seen this error quite a few time with customers computers and to be honest its absolutely impossible to diagnose as the error tells you nothing, the logs written to the error log tell you nothing and its usually a different file each time the machine crashes. There is also nothing which sets it off its seems completely random.

If your machine is bang upto date with its windows updates then I would have a look at the Sony site to see if there are any BIOS updates.

Having said that, i8042prt.sys is the driver for the ps/2 ports, so check those to make sure its not something simple like corrupt drivers or a bad connection to those ports.
