AVG isn't freeware, you can get a 30 day trial then it's cheque book time.

avast
I am currently using avast, which is free for home and non-commercial use.
So far i am impressed by the simplicity, efficiency and ease of use. Gotta register after 60 days "trial", but that is also free - but you need to purchase the pro edition if you are using it commercially.

Another vote for free AVG,
i got a new laptop off the missus for christmas and was really pissed at how slow it was running,just opening a folder took ages (like 20 secs after clicking it)
One of my mates who is an I.T tech ,without even looking at the computer told me to delete the free trial of Norton A.V off the machine and hey presto laptop running sweet.(he doesn't have a good word to say about Norton!

Just download McAfee off of Bit torrent...that's a joke, BTW.
I used AVG for a long time but it didn't stop me getting a virus despite being kept up to date. After battling with several AV products (including McAfee and Sophos) that didn't find or remove the virus, I went for Kaspersky, which isn't free but is only £25 for a year which is cheap enough, I reckon.

Got customers with over 250 PC's using AVG and NOD32.
In the time they have had these AV installed they have had zero viruses!
