hi all,
i have a 2.6 p4 processor and have read a lot on overclocking. has anybody on here done this? i suspect that the bf2 players may have.
i have a 2.6 processor, 768 memory and a nvidia 256 graphics card and can still only play on low settings.

BF2 is resource hungry (not as bad as COD2 thou).
As Bioforger said, more memory will help, as will a better gfx card - when you say '256' is it an FX5xxx series or similar?
Depends on your budget.
Overclocking you current components probably won't help boost your BF2 performance to medium.

The biggest factor in being able to overclock is whether your motherboard has adjustable settings for the Front Side Bus etc.

We don't overclock because we have to, we overclock because we can. As stated, it depends on the motherboard as to how far you can go, but most motherboards support at least some overclocking. The AMD rig should go quite nicely.
As for the OP, then yes, you can OC the bejeezus out of P4s (unless it's a Prescott) but I agree that the gfx is probably the bootleneck - what exact model of card is it?

Nvidia Pixelview 256MB 7800GTX, at least that's what it says on the box.
As for the motherboard its an ASRock K8NF4G-SATA2 Socket 754.
The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3200+.
Ive always wanted to over clock, but with the lack of knowledge and the worry of killing my PC i have never bothered.

Mr. M - even on high settings BF2 requires less than 1.5Gb ram on 64 player maps. However, for those with 1Gb, BF2 on 64 player maps @ high requires around 1.2 - 1.3 Gb (including XP).
TBH since patch 1.2, BF2 doesnt run 'completely' smoothly (which it did before) and thats on: X2 4800+, 2GB Corsair @2-3-3-6-1T-DDR400, 7800GTX 512 @ 580/1750, X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS, WD Raptor 74Gb / Seagate 7200.9 80Gb.
Roll on v1.21!

To start overclocking you need to have a good knowledge of the BIOS settings, so keep your motherboard manual handy for reference. Ask around or read on forums like Bit Tech to find out which settings give optimal results. You may need to arrange additional cooling if you're going to be overclocking your chip as it can raise the temperature and cause problems.

Re you're set-up, the 6200 really isn't geared up for gaming, based on your processor I'd say you have an AGP gfx slot, so if you have some spare cash, look at upgrading the 6200 to an AGP version of the 6600GT 128Mb, should be able to pick one up for less than 100 notes.

The 6600GT is a good entry level gaming card, will allow you to run BF2 on mostly medium, well hopefully, assuming the P4 is up to the job and 1Gb ram.

Apparently the GF4 cards just don't work thou - a few have tried and failed that I know.
If you guys are looking for new cards, circa 100 quid mark, take a look at:
AGP -> 6600GT
PCI-E -> X800GTo / 6600GT
Assuming you're running with 512Mb -> 1Gb RAM, and the CPU meets the minimum specs.

yes dump the 6200. Its a waste of time imo unless you play solitaire. The 6600gt is far superior to it (i have 2 in sli mode and it deals with all the games I have with medium to high quality settings(not a massive gamer though just recreational))
