Default A question for those that use linux/Unix all the time

Ok, I know BSD servers rock

But on the desktop, I want to try out a linux distro. I tried Ubuntu a while back and on the whole, it was ok. However is there a distro that doesnt suck as much at doing video and audio. I play no games on the pc ! Just I hate getting a nice avi/wmf off the internet and it wont play in the "kaffine" browser or whatever and it throws an exception or needs some files to fix it up. If they could fix that i could quite happily live with linux (although it does lack shiny shiny bling bling qualities of Windows!)
