Default Memory upgrade killed computer

I recently installed a 2nd memory stick which took my computer from 128mb to 640mb - everything running great.
Today i decided to upgrade again so swapped the origional 128mb for another 512mb so i have 1024mb.
When i switched on the computer i got a slight smell so turned the comp off - looked inside for anything burnt - nothing.
When i switch the computer on now i get a blank screen (backlit) nothing else.
I've tried swapping the memory about but the only progress? i get is if i just have the origional 128mb and no others - i then switch the power on and get the Compaq screen, then it goes blank.

spec is
Compaq Evo 2400
Pentium 4

I can only assume that you may have burnt out the Memory controller. You did put the RAM in the right way round?

Burning smells = something bad. The only other thing I can think of is that you may have damaged something when you tried plugging in the RAM.

do you get any beeps when you switch it on?
If you were a bit heavy handed when putting the new memory in there is a possibility that you may have cracked the motherboard.

Check the memory was correct for your motherboard. If your motherboard only takes low density memory that is all you can use.If you installed high density memory then that may be your problem the same if your board needs high density and you put in low density memory it wont work. Not entirely sure if it would damage your computer or not maybe someone else help there.
Check your motherboard manuel and find out.

strange you should post this.
i fitted a 512 ram card alongside the original 112mb card in at the mo.
when i sarted it up it was fine. now when you switch on it gets as far as the start up screen and goes no further, stays on xp start up?

the cards as far as i'm aware are the correct type....sdram. i been told that sometimes they will conflict. seems strange the pc has worked fine for the last 4 years n now since fitting 512 ram card its gone **** up!

going to try and remove new card tonight when i get in and see if it cures the probs, if it does will try removing old 112mb card and replace with new 512mb card and not run them together.

unless you have any other ideas??

You could give us the full model number of the computer & RAM you've bought?

The only thing you can do is to visually scan the board with your eyes and pay particular attention to the big square Micro Chips to see if you can see any sign of melting or a burnt surface.
