Default Help with PC spec

Hello

My bro in law wants to build a PC. It will be used for demoing some products he sells that nightclubs and bars use so that punters can text a number and the messages appear on their video walls. I think the software is Arkaos with a module added on. His only "must have" is a ATI or Radeon dual-head video card.

Can someone help me come up with a spec for a reasonable PC for this ? I was going to suggest one of the small cube PCs with an AMD or Intel 3.xGHz chip, 1gb of memory and an 80gb IDE disk. Maybe a DVD writer aswell as they are so cheap. This way the cost will be minimal and he will get a machine that does what he wants it to do.

Wouldn't he be better to buy a laptop?

Oh and as for dual head 2d stuff, Matrox is the way to go IMHO, with ATi in 2nd place.

I think Arkaos is quite CPU and memory hungry, so I am not sure a laptop will be man enough at the same price as a small cube. Doesnt need to be as portable as a laptop, will be mainly used for trade shows.

What he said...

Look at AMD X2 4400 or 4800 (I assume hes not an overclocker, so wants the best performance out of the box).

No idea why he insists on ATi - Nvidia support dual screens on pretty much all their cards over 50 quid.

You need to set a budget - this will dictate the spec - so what is it?

By the looks of the system requirements it doesnt need that much at all.
Im sure something from P4 2Ghz, 512Mb Ram would be fine. Graphics wise - depends on what the software supports, software upgrades etc. Agree on the Matrox theyre good for 2d graphics & dedicated packages, also i dont believe they have the heat problem(so also quieter)

Dave,

Another thing to consider is does he want to play games and use other apps on there? You could even drop to the X2 3800 (2x2Ghz cores).

Cheers, Alex

So a laptop could do the job. Most now have complex top of the range mobile versions of the best selling graphics cards.

If its a demo machine & purely a demo machine for one purpose only then you want to keep it simple & to the point. The more things you have the more things go wrong. Its a bit embarassing when showing customers your product & your hardware/software goes **** up.
A games machine & demo machine are two completely different products, you need to know which is it. Also consider if demoing at customer sites or kept local.
