Default Which external hard-drive?

Hi all,

- I have recently transferred some of my cd's to my hard-drive (converted to .mp3)
- I got a Handycam (one of those that records straight to DVD) recently & wanted to store the footage on my computer.
- My current 150GB internal hard-drive has about 10% remaining.

An external hard-drive will be my best option?
I'm guessing I’ll need around 300GB.
Budget £250.

How do the Maxtor (HD-050-MD, 2nd one down. Or perhaps HD-098-MD, last one) devices from Overclockers rate?
Are there any others I should look at?
If one looks cool that would be a bonus.

Thanks.

I just got one of these for £70ish

It's quiet, only 1 USB port, I um'd and ar'd over NAS, FW400/800 and all that and was going to spend £160+ on the Maxtor 300gb with 16mb cache and fw4/800/usb but then I came to my senses... It was about £100 less for only 50gb less...

Unless you have a laptop, why do you need an external hard drive

Just purchased one of these:

My housemate has had one for the last year and by all accounts they're fantastic not to mention reasonably priced...

Role on 1TB

I have a 300gb Pikaone external hard disk from Staples. It was on offer late last year for £100 reduced from £150 (It's now £130 in store)
I hadn't heard too much about the brand before I bought it but I took a chance anyway for the money. It's actually a Seagate 300gb NCQ drive inside and I priced them up at 90 odd quid for the drive alone....
I'm normally one to order from the web as I work in the IT field anyway but sometimes PC World have some reasonable deals on hard disks if you wanna pick one up off the shelf (A 300gb Toshiba, with Western Digital hard disk inside was on offer recently for £115)
Also,Staples,I think are still doing the 500gb Lacie Big Disk for £199.99 which, price wise,is comparable to web prices (You have the advantage of buying off the shelf and taking back etc if it isn't suitable!)

Good luck

I've got the MAXTOR one Touch 300GB 5200rpm version. Does the job. Not cheap though. But it supports both Firewire and USB2.

Wow plenty of choice! I will go into town tomorrow to check out both PCWorld and Staples as I couldn't find the exact devices online.
Yet did find a Toshiba 320GB for £114.99

Regarding why an external hard-drive, well I’m not sure....I use a desktop, but don't see room in the case for a second hard-drive. Nor am I sure what connections/type I will require.
The drive will be transported a few times a year.
