Best company for buying a domain name and webspace?
Mrs wants to get a domain name and do some web design.
She has 2 options:
1) get a domain name from my adsl service provider for an extra £1 a month on my contract for 2 years and use my accounts free 250mb web space
or
2) she can get her own independant webspace and domain.
Need to know how cheap the 2nd option can be and how much space you get, contract length etc?
TIA

I use www.ukreg.co.uk as you buy and own the domain and have full control over the DNS server ID's which mean if you wish to change Host you control the Tags. If you buy a domain with a host watch the transfer and admin fees as I have been stuffed in the past.

If you want a domain name and hosting, I'd recommend Titan Internet. Cheapest package they have is £50 a year (you can choose between hosting on Windows 2003 or Unix, and other features as well). Domain pricing varies depending on what you want, but price covers you for two years.
If you have a domain and then decide to go with Titan, they will transfer the domain for free (so I guess you could find a domain cheap somewhere else, then transfer it)
So, they aren't going to be the cheapest solution, but their service and support is fantastic. Been with them for 5 years and can't fault them.

Try www.heartinternet.co.uk
They have a free web hosting package, ideal for this sort of thing. Best to buy your domain through them, as transferring domains can be a pain in the rear (I don't think I've ever had a transfer go 100% smoothly).

Yep, Titan for me too.
Everytime I phone them up (like once every 2 years or so) Lee answers the phone and he's just so incredibly helpful it's untrue. He used to have a Scoob and post here, but he's now into M3's and doesn't come here now....

Do not buy the domain name from the host as they will always charge you to change id tags if you ever wanted to be hosted elsewhere and if they register it in their name you can have a legal nightmare if they refuse to give it to you or they go bust etc. This has happened to me and I had to go to the high court to resolve the issue as a lower court cannot issue vesting orders. Buy the Domain from UKreg and set the ID tags yourself. Your host will provide you with the relevant id tags for your site and if you change host just login to UKreg and change the tags.
All comments about domain transfers are just ID tag changes you can do yourself for free, no offense to anyone but I have been severly butt fu**ed on domain names in the past.

Thanks again for the advice - just registered a .co.uk domain for the Mrs with UKReg for under £7 for 2 years and can host it on my isp webspace for free Glad I asked here and then checked with my isp. It was a £1 a month for 24 months and then to renew the ownership of the domain name it was £52!!!
Let me see under £7 for 2 years with UKReg or initially £24 over 2 years and then £52 to renew it each year with the isp. Oh and if I left the isp to go else where the transfer fee would have been £45 if I had bought the domain name through them so yes I can see how you can get shafted by your isp! Wouldn't have known to ask all this stuff if I hadn't asked here first
Now just got to wait for it to be registered (24 hours) and then work out how to point it to my webspace.

www.1and1.co.uk for domain
www.mkhosting.co.uk for webspace (you get extra stuff like emails with your domain name and other goodies)

Hosting with your ISP is fine, but that'll just give you HTML support, not a proper Web server with CGI/PHP support, Etc.
Don't get me wrong, I don't work for them, I have no affiliation with them, but I do use them:

You are doing it wrong. Ask your internet host for the name servers they are going to use to host your www.xxx.com and then enter these into the name server boxes with UKreg. you do not need to change the IPS tags.
Just to add my posts above mention tags which should have been name servers. The IPS tags are the registrar companies and you have no need to ever change them unless you want to leave UKreg as the registrar company. All you ever need to do is change the name servers to the relevant hosting company.

Thanks for the reply, looks like it maybe Plusnet causing the issues then as when I try to transfer the name into my webspace it says I can't until the IPS tags have been changed to Force9 which is their IPS tags.
I put the Plusnet server names and ip addresses in for the domain so its not that, its Plusnet that says the domain needs to have the IPS tags set.

I use UK Reg and Fasthosts for about a dozen names with one block of webspace (cheapskate )
Leave your domain with UK Reg and simply point it to your free webspace URL e.g.
www .mydoma in.co.uk --> www .myotherhostingco mpany.com/users/bravoswebspa ce/mrsbravosubdirectory
You can use hiden pointing with UK Reg so visitors will never know the difference
Ps. any host worth there salt will do this - my previous domain reg co was www.easily.co.uk - transfer of tags should also be free
