Question RAM upgrade

I'm using a desktop Pentium4 computer mainly for the internet, i've just found out it only got 120mb of ram, if i upgrade will this make files open more quickly and start up quicker?

spec as seen in device manager is

INTEL PENTIUM (R) 4 CPU 2.40GHZ
2.39 GHZ, 120MB OF RAM

I'm using Win XP Pro service pack2

is it a plug and play fix to upgrade Ram? what do i look for when buying (pcworld had different types 333, 400, etc)

Cheers

Hi Robby
Yes more RAM will speed up operations like booting up and opening files. When you buy you have to make sure the RAM you buy is compatible with your machine. Easiest way to do this is match it to what is already inside it - dead easy. Search on google for adding RAM to a computer and there will be loads of step by step guides for you to follow. Also, go to http://www.crucial.com/uk/ where you will be able to put in the details of your current computer and the site will tell you what type of RAM you need.

Do you have a integrated graphics card and if so it could be using most of the memory, you should be able to adjust the amount of memory it uses

XP needs at least 128MB RAM just for the O/S before you start to open any other programs. I would definately consider a RAM upgrade to at least 512MB or even 1GB. You should notice a big difference. And your Hard Drive will thank you for it as well (less swap filling).

Thanks for the help, i used Crucial who recommended at least 512mb upgrade so i ordered a 512mb add on at the pcworld website (saved £11 online), picked it up from the store this morning and have just fitted it myself (didn't blow anything up ).
I now have 632mb of ram and the thing is excellent - mow i'm thinking of swapping the origional 128mb for another 512mb (i only have 2 slots in total) - is it ok to pull out the first ram to swap with another?

Thanks again

Shouln't be a problem as long as your motherboard supports 1gb RAM. I'm sure it will but crucial will confirm.

Best way to find out is to go to the manufacturers website and look it up. Or got to crucila.com and put your model in. Should bring up the correct RAM for you.

AV8deluxe is an Asus board, you can find that through Crucial in the motherboard section.
