Can you recommend a laptop please?
My other half needs to get a laptop for work use. The company are paying for it but she has to do the research on it. A very rough budget of £600-£800 has been set, although that could be increased if need be.
From what i have been told it needs to be light, have a memory of at least 512mb to run the glorified database software they use and be able to join a small network.
I was thinking of one from Dell, although i don't know which one. If i'm honest i'm a bit out of touch with laptops these days. The last one i had ran Windows 95.
Can anyone help please?

Posted a very similar topic yesterday. I also have a similar budget, and desire the same spec. However, it seems no-one knows about laptops, as i havent had a single reply!

That isn't good to hear.
I didn't see your post earlier, otherwise i wouldn't have started a new thread.
Lets hope one of us gets a reply soon!

to be honest, you both have a reasonable grasp on what criteria your laptop should have, so my next step would be to check out the screens at a dixons/curries/pc world.
I'd recomment a 15" laptop with at least 1024x768 resolution.
a combined DVD reader/writer (or just CD writer) for your dvd watching, music listening needs.
make sure it has a couple of usb2 slots for interfaces to iPods, pdas, phones, etc.
60gb drive would be a good minimum hard disk size.
then it's just best processor that will go along with the above spec for your price band.

ps, you don't need to buy from said stores, just see what the screens are like.
i wouldn't buy a dell as i don't like the screens - too used to sony vaios.
screens are personal taste and they are important if you spend any time infront of them

Screen certainly are personal choice. I love the screen on my Dell XPS, however that wasn't one of the cheaper Dells, and so you'd expect it to be a little clearer.
I know that our firm has bought loads of Dell laptops over the last few years, (switched from Compaqs and IBM Thinkpads), and not only are they very good value for money, we've found them to be very reliable as well...

I've recently installed a couple of Toshiba Portege S100 laptops, very nice they are too & are 1.99kb in weight. The entry level model comes in at £799 + VAT RRP & you can get a free Vodafone G3 card with it.
