Wireless Router help please???
I bought a Dell laptop and netgear d834g wireless router and I'm connected to Tiscali broadband, I installed tiscali all o.k then plugged router in followed instructions on cd for setup i.e making laptop TCP/IP enabled etc as instructions.
Then it says to unplug router for 15 seconds then plug back in and test light should go off, it didn't come on!! so it then says restart computer, so I did that and reload netgear cd and go to settings to connect to the router http address and it just says unable to make connection!
Any ideas folks
Thanks
chris

Try this:
Left click 'START' then click run. Type 'cmd'. When a black window appears with a c: then type ipconfig /all. Do you have an IP address listed? (i.e 192.168.0.1 and not 0.0.0.0) If not then the router hasn't assigned you an IP address to connect to it. The other thing maybe that you have to put the MAC address into the router so that you can gain access. Are you using WEP? Wireless Encryption Protocol. If enabled on the router then you have to set-up your network card as well. Try disabling WEP on the router to start with. Once up and running start adding in your security (WEP).

Ive set up a few netgear routers, by default the encryption and mac filtering are off, unless you've configured it so no need to worry about that. When you say installed tiscali then plugged in router have you put in your username and password (account details for tiscali) onto the router itself? sorry if ive misread your post
dont use the netgear cd for now just try 192.168.1.1 in the web browser (not 100% sure what the router address is by default, may be 192.168.0.1)
try to access the router using a network cable also.

first things first uninstall the tiscali CD on your PC and the modem software. Its no longer needed.
The router will provide the internet and has a modem built in to it. so:
1. Plug your modem cable into the back of the router
2. Plug the network cable provided into your laptop and into a switch port on the back of the router, i know you want wireless but its best to hard wire it to set up the router
On the ones i set up, if you then turn on the router....give it 10 secs
Go into internet explorer the router home page should automatically load up, this will take you through the setup procedure which will involve putting your tiscali account details into the router itself. The router connects to the net with the tiscali information, i cant find an exact guide but this get you started if you look around here
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/dg...tall_guide.pdf
If you do use wireless remember to secure it once youve got it all working
let me know how it goes

right keep it like that
did you enter the tiscali information.....username and password etc into the router????? this needs to be entered before it will go onto the net
if you cant get back onto it you may need to do a hard reset
the config screens on the router should prompt you for the username and password for tiscali

ok now that you are connected to the net you need to go back into the router configuration screens.
Cant remember the exact screens off the top of my head but there should be a tab on the left along the lines of wireless security?????
Use WPA-PSK security if you have the option. Otherwise use 128bit-WEP. Tha basic premise here is that you type a password into the router on the WPA option. Use something un-obvious
bad passwords........password, 12345678, man-utd
good passwords......$cooBy-NeT1?+4ft (thats just an example)
The password you typed in the router will then need to be typed in on the wireless clients that try to access your net connection so make sure you remember your password that you use. A wireless computer within range of your router will see your network but will not be able to connect
anyone on here know the exact page to enter this information on the router
once you get that working you can also tighten up security further by MAC filtering and disabling SSID broadcasting but try to get security working first
