Question Stopping printer heads clogging up.

Is there anything you can do to stop your print heads clogging up (Epson stylus 740) once you've finished using it.
I only use my printer once a month and every time i go back to it i have to mess around unblocking the nozzles.

Stupid question time. I take it you do switch the printer off after using it? A neighbour of mine has a Epson 740 and they left it on after not using the PC for months on end and tried 3 new black cartridges to try to get it to print. It took 15 cleanings via the cleaning option in print manager to un-clog it. If you don't switch it off then the heads don't get capped off to stop them drying up.
If you do switch it off, then what type of cartridges are you using? Maybe the cartridges.

Epson's are pretty bad, got one myself and it never works, took it to the Epson repair shop under warranty and the bloke there said do myself a favour and buy a HP instead, uses up about a cartridge of ink to clean the heads and really pisses me off !!!

Another vote to bin it I'm afraid.
I had a stylus 740 and wouldn't clean after a whole cartridge..
Parent bought me a newer one an 86C I think, had it a few months, forgot and left it on, two brand new cartridges and it still wouldn't clear the nozzles.
I'd only printed off about 5 or 6 A4 sheets from new
In a fit of temper I ripped the leads out the back, took it out on the Patio and launched it as hard as I could at the slabs, swept up, went off to PC world and bought myself a Canon IP5200, best printer ever......

Still using my Epson 740, and for what it's worth it has yet to let me down. Had it for over 5 years now. Like Andy has said, he left his switched on. Plus I use some pretty descent cartridges (Not Epson ones (3 pairs for £10 ones from a computer fair). So a vote for trying the old cleaning routine. Unless you have spare cash to burn.

And if the heads DO block, what can be done, apart from pissing ink down the drain?

Can the print head be taken off and soaked?

If so, in what?
