Setting up a forum
I'm looking to set up a forum and looking for a bit of guidance, I have a server I can use, I'm assuming I need SQL server 2000 or above, but what forum software would you recommend.
I have one setup with Invisionfree at the moment, but after a few issues I'm thinking a dedicated self hosted one is the way to go.
Thanks,
Mark

It all depends how many users etc...
Personally i rate vBulletin very highly, very configurable, and continually being updated etc...
I now host my websites on Linux as opposed to Windows as it is certainly a better platform for hosting this kind of script on.

If it's for personal use I'd be inclined to host it with a third party - only £20 per year or there abouts.
I wouldn't put a windows box (with IIS & SQL) in an internet facing position without lots of protection!
I use http://www.phpbb.com/
Hosted with www.34sp.com
using their linux setup with mysql.
It's not that hard to setup - it's documented very well.
My site: www.lanse.co.uk

Right. let me get this right, vBulletin (cost associated) & phpbb (free) are both applications that are uploaded to hosted services offered by companies such as www.34sp.com using mysql. Once it's upload are you ready to design your forum and are the there skins/stylesheets that you can upload and modify.
On my invisionfree forum, I currently have 30 registered members, so I'm thinking that the 50mb with 34sp would be sufficient to start out with.
Is it as easy as that?
Thanks

Vote for Invision Power Board here.
Although I do like this new version of vB scoobynet is running. It's more like invision now - with the inline-edits etc. A lot less page changing.
