Unhappy Typical

For once, all the bits I ordered for my Christmas build arrived in one go.

But when I came to check the motherboard, there is nowhere to mount the CPU heatsink and fan - the "Retention Module Base" is missing

What's the betting I'll be back at work in the New Year before this gets sorted!

That is definitely annoying. Good choice on the board though - I put it in mine last month.

answering your next Q... Yup, should be there already fitted, a black plastic square ready to screw or clip the fan onto

So presumably yours came with it attached?

At first I thought it came as a kit - a bit like the old slot pentiums, but no, it's just plain missing!

I did double check a few pictures before I contacted the supplier - Scan. They are usually pretty good with RMA stuff, though it will take more than a few days to sort, and they usually close over Christmas and the New Year

Agreed on the 7800. I've got 2x 512mb 7800gtx cards running in SLI in my rig and you wouldn't believe how fast that runs

I'm just trying to find a game that will push it to its limits now. Haven't found one yet....

Makes my setup look positively antique and I was quite happy with it previously!

Ok ... this is going to sound completely **** but ....

If that is the anti-static bag that you have the mobo laying on, it is one of the worst places to put it.
Those stat bags are designed to pass static around them and keep it away from inside, so placing components on the bag is a big no no

There ... I've said it and its off me chest

Don't seem to be able to get it to run. Gets 3 quarters of the way through, then quits with a message saying "window lost focus".

Anyway, despite that, it's giving me a score of 12251

Talking Result!

Smokebelch - OK point taken. I've always done that (and never had a problem AFAIK) but I shall desist immediately

Anyhoo, good old Scan have come up trumps, and I now have the missing bracket. My thanks to the marvellous Michelle who sorted this out double quick - excellent service!

One question I have on this build - my first Athlon 64. I'm used to using compound to seat the cooler on the CPU, but this has a sticky pad. Does it go straight on as it is or should I add compound?

Good old Dabs as well - the kit I ordered yesterday morning has turned up THIS morning!
Standard delivery and the week before Christmas - not bad!

Oh, the graphics card is the 256Mb 7800GT (I had a budget to stick to), but combined with the Athlon 64 x2/4600 (and 2Gb of RAM) it should be fairly speedy

The mobo is the Asus SLI one, as above.. .so I'll invest in another 7800GT when the prices drop

Im running an AMD 3200+, 1.5GB RAM and 256Mb 7800GTX it runs smooth as silk now, even though i had to upgrade my motherboard and PSU just to get it running!
