Got two PCs that i need to network to play world of warcraft side by side

Please could a someone tell a clueless nerd (myself) the parts i need to do this.

is it just a cable linking the two?

2 * network cards, about 5/10 quid and a network crossover cable, about 3 quid. If you are on XP the set up is dead easy, just install the cards using the provided software and it should auto configure, you have got onto the web to get here so its no harder than that, plus you can google anything to get the answers.

You can do it via USB but I would imagine its slower and I have never done it, the best option is a wireless router and a couple of cards for future expansion, also wired routers are very cheap, in fact networking gear is buttons these days.

Does this work to connect a PC and a Mac? I just need to get files from one tothe other. They're both on the same network but I can't get them to see each other ...

Umm. Seem to recall that you need install the appletalk protocol on your PC for it to connect to a MAC and vice versa. You could try a search on Google.
