I currently have a Sony RDR-GX7 (which I'm selling), which I've had for about two and a half years. I'm looking to get a HD version, so will probably go for the RDR 510 because the missus records so much. Too be honest and listening to the people I'm aware of that have HD, I'll stick with either Pioneer or Sony because of the format compatibility they offer.

Those ones at Lidls look good value, will take a look down there later. One question though, is there any easy way of linking it to sky so it will automatically record stuff from your personal planner? I like the idea of DVD+HDD but Sky+ maybe a better option, just wondered what others thought?
O and I just phoned sky and the guy said well as an existing customer its £259 for the box and installation. I said I saw an offer on the web for new customers for £49 and then he goes 'O yea, ok I'll do it for £49!' anyway didnt take it as they cant install until the end of Jan, need something for xmas really.

Anyone else got any advice on this? Took a look in Curry's yesterday (yeah, I know ... there's one just up the road ...) and there seem to be two types: ones with about 6 hours record (lame!) and ones with 100 - 200 hours. I don't need 200 but 100 or so would be nice. They had a Sony for 499 (200+ hours) and a, I think, Panasonic with 100 hours.
Any special features that are must-have? I'm not bothered about the ability to watch one channel when recording another.
Also, does Sky+ have a monthly subscription or is it the one-off charge for the box only?
Cheers!

If you pay over £30 a month to Sky for your subscription then they will enable the record and Sky+ functions for no additional cost. If your sub is less than £30 a month you will need to either pay an extra £10 or increase your package to be £30 a month.

Well I bit the bullet and bought an LG DVD with 80GB HDD just before xmas from comet for £230 and I am very pleased with it, supports all formats and dual layer discs, plays DivX got video+ built in and takes DV input so I can transfer stuff from the camcorder onto HD/DVD, its great!

Thanks Andy.
Brought the HD DVD recorder back to Curry's today. It was a Phillips, actually pretty nice (I've always liked Phillips stuff), but you can't record with the timer off a regular Sky box. Looks like Sky+ is the easiest choice ....

Another vote for the LG (£220 in Currys ......... ) superb bit of kit - particularly like the way the video thumbnails start playing in the browser menu.

Somehow Scooby Dooby Blue, as the rest of the thread is about Sky+ or LG HD recorders from Currys, I'd assume the advice required is on Hard Drive Recorders. Looks like he also went to Lidl after a 160Gb model, so yep, def Hard Drive!

is it possible to get a sky+ box from ebay, then just phone up sky and ask for subscription upgrade?
or will it be: "sorry sir- we cant enable sky+ as you did not buy the sky+ box through us"
???
