do all free view channels have a limited signal, in other words if you have a large TV screen can you not get rid of the black lines either side of the picture???

They're just ones that have their prog in 4:3 but broadcasting in 16:9 and have 'filled' in the sides. Most are 16:9 these days but things like football matches (esp abroad) and old progs are 4:3. Either put up with the bands or 'stretch' the pic using your tv zoom feature or suchlike.
