Processor upgrade Q.
I am very confident with pc but i have never upgraded a cpu.
Is it just plug and go or will i have to fart about with bios etc??
And is it easy to do or a right pain in the ****?
currently have intel celeron and want to upgrade to p4.
Thanks.

You need to ensure that your pin allocation matches the motherboard.
E.g. Pentium 4/celeron could be socket 478, or 775
Some motherboards might need bios flashed to support newer processors.
FSB might be different from the celeron - the list is endless.
Best bet is to install CPU-Z and cut and paste results on to here and we can all help a lot easier.

hard disk died Third seagate drive to die on me so far.
Maxtor are just as bad have 1x 80gb dead 2x 120gb all dead and just out of warranty.
So if you can recomend a decent disk that would be great too!
Thanks again.

I swear by 2 manufacturers - Samsung and Western Digital.
Although I have never yet had a drive fail, and that includes a ten year old IBM Desktar drive that is still going strong.
I have tried Maxtor and Seagate. The Maxtor was great but I would never have another Seagate. I have never had such a noisy drive!
The Samsung is just about silent.

Its horses for courses with drives and will probably cause unending arguments on here. I personally have a couple of 300gb maxtors 16mb cache running striped. I fit any old 80s and 120gbs to various machines without problems. I haven't had a failure since the days of the old "deathstar"
I can't imagine what is damaging your hard drives, I don't think its bad luck
Do you have adequate cooling fans around the hard drive area of your case, or did you have them all stacked on top of each other ?

CPUs are straightforward to replace now. They generally all have heat spreaders protecting them so it is very difficult to crush the core.
Just don't damage the pins when you seat it.

Don't forget to clean n reapply the thermal paste if you're using the same heatsink, and install it correctly. If you buy a retail cpu u normally get a heatsink with paste already applied, I usually apply a small amount of thermal paste to the cpu anyway to keep the temps nice n low, i.e 35-40c on idle, no more than 55-60c on full load (AMD64).
