Default Windows Media Center Edition? (Xbox 360)

Hello

I just looked at an Xbox 360, but it appears that to do anything useful (as in play DivX etc..) I need a Windows Media Center? What on earth is that? According to microsoft.com it is something that can only be pre-installed at a dealer on a special computer.

I want to be able to stream movies from my XP machine.

You can download this plugin for standard XP to get some of the media functions on the Xbox360 without the cost implications of having to build/install a media centre PC.

Hello

That looks useful. Does it let you stream DivX?

Thanks,

Steve

I don't think it will let you stream DivX, however I could be wrong though. Im fairly sure the above just allows you to stream Images, Music and select movie formats!

I shall give it a test on the 2nd Dec

I'm having real problems trying to hook the PC to the 360,l does the 360 have to be connected to a modem for this to work or can I run a direct Ethernet cable from downstairs to the PC !!!

I'm not connected to a modem, all my devices just run ethernet cables into a 4 port hub....

If you're connecting the 360 directly into an ethernet card in your PC then you may well need a crossover cable as opposed to a straight through cable...

What is your setup on the PC ! Have you got Internet Connection Sharing setup! I'm fairly sure you will need this to give the Xbox an IP addy..

Hmm think we're barking up the wrong tree with ICS when I think about it..

How does your PC/Xbox connect to the web/live at the moment, I'm assuming you must have some kind of network in place to get them connected...

I run a Ethernet cable from the back of my 360, up stairs to the NTL modem, for which I exchange cables for which ever I want to use

In that case sounds like you're going to need 2 network cards in the PC. 1 will connect to the NTL modem and the other will connect to the PC downstairs. The card that is connected to the modem will have the ICS on it....

Good article Here

Sorry the xover adapter didn't work Wah

I know that when I was using my old box, to connect to it, I had to use a xover cable (hence our discussion yesterday)

But reading from the above posts, it sounds like you're trying to do something else.
If it's JUST to connect the 360 to the PC to transfer/stream audio & video, all you need is the cable.

If you're trying to run the whole lot with the internet, then you're either looking at 2 network cards (as stated above) or some type of NTL compatible router.........

Really thought that would work.....

Hope you get it sorted soon

Dan

no worries mate I have given up on it now spat my dummy out with it y'day so not bothering with it today, I'm just gonna play games and rip CD's to the hard drive

It's weird it finds the network adaptor then hunts for a IP addy and fails on that !!

Unless you have a DHCP server running, it's going to fail every time. I haven't seen the X360 setup (thanks Play.com ) but you'll need to set up your PC and Xbox with manually assigned IP addresses to communicate (if they're only connected to each other just put 10.0.0.1 for the pc and 10.0.0.2 for the Xbox with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0). However, this is going to become a pain in the *** as you're cable modem will want to assign an IP address through DHCP.

What I'd do is buy a cable router. This will sort out your internet connection, you'll have enough ports to plug both your pc and your xbox into at the same time, it'll also dish out DHCP addresses and you'll be able to connect your xbox and pc together and access the internet on both of them at the same time.

It's hard to get into specifics on a forum but that's the gist of it. PM me for more info if you want.
