Have you checked your internet connection and tried again? lol
Can you get to other websites?
If you can it could be that the Apple SU site is down which I've had before.
I just tried mine and it worked OK.
You say 'one of your macs' do the others work ok?
How can you be a Mac nOOb with multiple Macs eh?

so many questions lol! thanx for the quick reply btw
I do have an internet connection and updated all the others ok. I managed to update a g4 and 3 other emacs ok.
I set them all up about 2 years ago but never have much to do with them. Im a pc man myself but was finding some interesting stuff of them when i was having a play around before. Tony Hawk demo passed a bit of time
I will try it again tomorrow and see how it goes.

What version of OSX is it running?
What version are the others running?
If formatting is not going to be a pain in the wotsit then I'd say do it anyway...

1) Get onto the absolute latest revison of the OS you are running. For example, if you're on 10.3.4, then upgrade to 10.3.9. Ideally you should really get 10.4 and get onto 10.4.3
2) Launch Disk Utility (It's in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder) and select the hard drive and use the "repair permissions" option. Then after that, see if software updat works
3) Worst case, go here and manually download some of the updates based on products you have or the OS version you're running.
4) Boot from the OS Install CD and perform an "Archive and Install". This will put a new OS on your machine but maintain all your settings. See if that works. If not, boot again and do a clean install. Remember to backup before doing this as you'll lose everything.

One other thing, you could try software update from the terminall application
Launch Terminal (In Utilities folder within Applications) then enter:
softwareupdate --list
Then press return. That should list all the updates availble for your machine. If that works then it shows you can connect to software update, so the issue might be with the GUI version, so try this in terminal:
sudo softwareupdate --install --all
You will be prompted for your password after you press the return key. Enter your password and then press return.
After a while the updates will be installed, I'd then reboot the machine, and then try software update again.
