Default Wireless Cable routers

We have two PC's in our house and the PC downstairs is the only one that has access to the Net. (NTL's 2mb broadband) and we would like to have the upstairs PC have access to the net.

So i was thinking about a wireless router.

I don't know where to start looking. A mate of mine has the same internet connection and he as got a linksys wireless router that he brought from PC world. I have had a look on their site and i can't see it

Sorry if this question has been asked before ??

Cheers

Don't buy from PC world, try somewhere like ebuyer.co.uk for better prices, have a look at the netgear, 3com and linksys stuff all pretty much the same realy for what you would want. If you can get the same brand wireless card as router.

But be careful..........AFAIK, you need a specific kit for the NTL setup as it has to go through the modem.

Also, Linksys aren't reckoned to be too reliable.

I got a Net gear package, which came with a wireless adapter for one PC. Works well.

The early Linksys stuff was terrible, the later stuff seesm to be much better. And Linksys works very well with NTL.

I threw away my linksys wa54g kit because of the number of problems I had with it. Using dlink stuff now and have had no problems since. Running 3 pcs, an xbox, and two wireless laptops through it

p.s. you do not need any special router for use with ntl. All you need is a standard wireless router with an ethernet input.

Ive had a few wireless routers working on my 2mb NTL BB.

My current kit consists of:

Belkin Pre N MIMO Router
Belkin Pre N MIMO PCI adapter
Belkin Pre N MIMI Laptap card
Belkin Super G 125 USB Adapter

I shopped around and asked many people on here as well as otehr forums. Everyone recommended the above router for its signal strength.

I ended up getting it from Ebyer as a complete package

Router on its own is £80 or 86 with a PCI/Laptop card
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=79071

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=91738

Read the reviews from that website.

All you need to do is plug the cable modem in and thats it. I tried my laptop in the car round the corner from the block and still worked. was well amazed.

Hope this helps, dont hesitate to ask any questions.

Belkin and Dlink products from my experience are quite poor, constantly need rebooting, always need firmware updates etc.

Get linksys equipment, you will always get a strong wireless connection and no problems with dropping connections.

The person above who said they sent the linksys router back either did not have it setup correctly or they had a faulty router.

At last check the Linksys was around £60 from Ebuyer.

Conflicting information. I think the best bet would be to buy one of the said routers and try it.

The linksys router I had was set up correctly, (I should know, working in a rather large IT company like I do ). I know several other people (software developers) who have had problems with the linksys kit. Works fine for a while, and then it suddenly loses all of its settings requiring everything to be set up again.

Been using a Dlink for a couple of months now and not had any problems so far (the linksys was going belly up at least once a week).

I think the conclusion that you can draw from all this is...that the early kit, regardless who it was from, was not that good.

I've had problems with lots of different brands of kit, and have complained sufficiently vocally, and for long enough to be given replacement upgraded kit. The newer stuff seems to work a lot better.

If you dash out to the shops now, buy the current edition of PC Pro. It comes in a clear plastic wallet (this issue), with a free copy of their new mobile magazine. At the back of the mobile magazine there are whole sections on setting up this stuff, and what to buy

Does anyone know if there is a decent 8-port wired/wireless router around suitable for working with cable? I've had a look at the Linksys stuff and it all seems to be 4 port

Not seen one at sensible prices, (although I haven't looked that hard). It might be cheaper just to buy wireless network cards for your machines. Would save on cabling as well

I bought a Belkin 125 High Speed Network Card & Router and have had no probs what so ever.

Router was advertised at £69.99 but when I went in it was actually £49.99 (PC World)

Network Card was £24.99

But make sure you get the one compatable to ntl/cable and not just BT

I stand by what I said about Linksys..........I've spent my last two saturday morning trying to sort my router, it just loses ALL it's settings for no apparent reason. The second time it did it, I was in the middle of something on the net, and it just packed up.

Alcazar & Iain, I'll back you up too on Linksys - utter crap. I know they got a lot of complaints early on and revised their equipment.

As someone mentioned the newer wireless products seems more stable. I think all the manufacturers have raised their game.

The nost reliable brand I've used is Draytek, but you pay a little extra for it.

Now to put a spanner in the works...

Yesterday i went into PC world (Luton branch) and looked at what they had to offer.
I spoke to a member of staff and said when i wanted to do etc... He pointed me at this one http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...%2Etworking%2F
for £44.99

or a N-router (the wizzier one) for £99 instead of £159.
More DLS wireless routers here
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...ubcat_uid=1160
Darren
btw, i foud out that i need to get a DSL router instead of a ADSL one.
