I think my main hard drive is on the way out so i've got a new one. Is there any simple way of transferring everything from the one already there to a new one so that it'll be a straight swap & it'll boot straight up as if nothing's changed?

I've already tried ghosting it with Norton Ghost & that didn't work so i'm now at a loss?

assuming its a desktop machine you should be able to install the second drive into the machine at the same time as the faulty one so both appear in windows explorer and then copy the complete HD immage across.
Should then be just a question of removing the original drive and hey presto.

This is all assuming that your current hard drive isn't complete toast already!

Alternativley if you know someone who has an external caddy you can install the new drive into a hook it up like a external USB drive and transfer the data that way.
I know maplins do a few things like this that arn't that expensive.

I did think about that but just thought it might take too long. Mind you saying that it isn't exactly quick running ghost

I'll have another go soon but it's a right pain in the t*t's. Already got a second drive in the PC so I have to take the whole thing apartand have the new hard drive on the outside of the computer

Best thing I found is install fresh on the new drive (your machine will be quicker for a start) and then take a ghost image of your old drive and keep it to one side for getting your files out that you want using ghost explorer.

Usually Norton ghost is fine for disk dupes. a) what version you running, and b) are you copying drive or imaging and then writing?

It's Norton Ghost 2003 (version 2003.0.0.789) & I was copying the whole drive. Not 100% sure how to use it but a mate said it might work for copying the data so I experimented.

Hmm, I was gonna suggest 2003 next if you were using older. The probable reason for failure could be the impending end of your drive. If it don't like it, it's looking grim.

Have a look about for one of the other drive copy utilities and you 'might' be lucky

Ghost works fine for me, but i use the 2002 version as it runs in DOS. Is the 03 version run from in Windows? If so that is asking for trouble and why I use the older DOS version.

2003 has a windows interface that allows you to choose the operation. It then reboots into the supplied PC-DOS mode and completes the operation.
