No, it means they're going to do what the Americans already do with ADSL.

Unlike over here where Oftel make BT offer ADSL as a fixed speed product, the americans get up to (typically) 768mbps and you actually get whatever speed your line can support, which depends on the distance from the exchange etc. etc.

Here, if your line cannot acheive 512mbps then you fail the test and can't have ADSL, even if your line does support 500mbps you still can't have it. This is not BTs fault it is Oftel's

This company will be offering ADSL2 which has a theoretical maximum of 24mbps (maybe more) and you'll get whatever your line can handle, which means you probably wont see 24mbps unless you live next door to the exchange.

I think you might be talking about 768Kbps not M...

ADSL is 8Mbps down 768Kbps up maximum
ADSL2 is 24Mbps down 1Mbps up maximum

I was.

The "traditional" American ADSL service is up to 786 down and up to 256 up with no gurantee that you'll get this, but you get the best your line can do up to this limit.

24Mbps is just a head line grabber!

I will be very surprised if anyone get 24Mbps. You will need to live in the exchange to get that kind of speed. It will be more like around the 8-16Mbps range.

Remember ADSL is meant to be 8Mbps - On the LLU network such as Bulldog you can get 8Mbps however its more like 6.5Mbps in most cases that I've seen.

BE will have similar coverage to Bulldog! Therefore most people wont be able to get the service.

I registered my interest with both companies when they announced their products. Bulldog write to me occasionally but can only offer standard ADSL to 2MB as I'm not on one of their exchanges but BE have informed me Chippenham will be upgraded next Feb. From that I'd summise BE are rolling out to more places, but it's not a large survey
