Default External HDD for a Laptop

I use a Toshiba Tecra 8000 PII 366 for surfing & storing phots & am running out of room (6gb HDD!), it only has USB not USB 2.0, can I run an external HD from it ?
Any ideas on what'd be suitable ? Or would it be so slow it wouldn't be worth it ?

Generally most USB 2.0 will run on 1.1, just slower.

Overclockers list a few Western Digital models (+ other makes). The first one on the page uses a notebook sized 2.5" HD so will be quite small. If the size of the drive doesn't matter, then the next one down is 80GB for £2 less.

I presume you're running Windows? What version? Early versions of Windows 95 were crap for USB support.

getting a external hdd enclosure is the easy option. alternatively, get a bigger hdd and swap it out of your tecra. that's what i did with my tecra 8100. swapped the 6GB for a 20GB

Why is the 40 GB just slightly more expensive than the 80 GB? Is it just because it's smaller and more compact or have I missed anything? david

Lacie make external HDDs that have both USB and NETWORK interfaces. So if you have a network card in your laptop you will be able to access the drive at very high speeds.

The prob is that they may be out of your budget as a 250Gb drive is around £130 IIRC. You can get them from www.savastore.com

The 250 gig USB HD costs £100 and the casing is in a nice ally case designed by porsche.

Correct - the 2.5" form factor HDs are more expensive than the more common 3.5" size used in desktop PCs.

I use a Portable Add-ons external usb/firewire caddie. You can put any 2.5" (9.5mm height) HDD inside it. I opted for a 100GB Toshiba which works a treat.
