Lets see what the new version of windows brings next year. I believe this has been named Microsoft "vista" a.k.a longhorn. So when that version crashes you can always mutter the words 'hasta la vista'

I've tried longhorn beta as I'm on the beta pilot test team. Its quite a bit different to XP obviously, but the OS abs munches through RAM, so its no good to me. On bootup ater a fresh install, with nothing else loaded, it uses 400-500mb of ram near enough So 2gig as a bare minimum will be required as it stands.

Mmmmmm, quite svelte then
I suppose we should cut it some slack as it is a Beta, that said I remember running Win200 Pro Beta in Oct '99 and it rocked ! Simply night and day compared to Win NT at the time.
I wonder if this is an OS to far . . . . . time will tell

Apparrently when it does come out it, you need 512MB just to run the O/S and I believe a Direct x 9 Compatible Graphics card, due to the rumoured 3d desktop it now uses.

Am looking forward to see what Vista is going to be like at handling spyware, adware and viruses. Would be really nice to see if it can actually stop them without having to use copious 3rd party software.

Yeh it does exactly that Luminous as it has MS's anti-spyware or variant of built in. Also when u install drivers there is now no user intervention at all, u doubleclick the install, and thats it, you dont even see a next button. This OS is very much for the complete PC novice imo, n for that reason I don't like it at all.
IE7 is ok, it now has multi tabbing ala firefox.
Overall its a bit of an apple mac osx copy to me.

Multi tabbing sounds like a great improvement They will have to do a little more than that to win me back, but its a good step in the right direction.
Don't like the sound of just double clicking on drivers for them to install. I like my options, cos its only going to be a matter of time before you need to tell it what to do

3rd party apps will get around that I'm sure. Or windows installer will be updated after enough people moan
Explorer is completely re-written in .net n is still flakey.
There is alot of alpha blending (transparency) goin on now in the folder/windows, which all looks nice, but eats up resources n ram. Also Avalon makes an appearance, as part of the WinFX filesystem.
Apart from the above n some changes to the startmenu, (dialog search/app box/clock), its pretty much like XP.
Note to MS, u must try harder
