Am i right in thinking it's like having your desktop PC elsewhere in the house, but able to have the mouse, keyboard and monitor elsewhere?

It's a way of showing and using another PCs desktop/programs and icons on your PC. In a way you are remote controlling another PC.

Remote desktop in a nutshell allows you to connect via the internet or local network from your computer to someone elses computer and see exactly what the other person is seeing and it also gives you the ability to control the other computer. It is used a lot to help people fix problems because you can be for example, sitting in London and see exactly what a user in Hong Kong is seeing and by taking control of their mouse and keyboard you can do anything you like with their computer and hopefully fix their problem.

Another use is for older hardware that doesnt have the power to maybe use something like photoshop (or word, excel or a database etc). You can use the very old machine and connect to another PC (usually a server) that does have the power to run photoshop and via remote desktop work as if the computer you're running photoshop on is your own.

Hello

As above. I use it for several things: When I'm working at home I prefer to use my main PC, so remote desktop to my laptop to check/send email. When I'm at work, I remote desktop to my PC at home and surf sites that may be deemed as innappropriate (Scoobynet!) from work.

Several firewalls will block the port for remote desktop, I can thoroughly recommend the free http://www.logmein.com which allows you to connect to your PC via a standard web interface.
