Fast laptops
Anyone know of a laptop with the following high performance features?
Looking around...
My Sony S3 does S-ATA, but only at 5400
DELL do 7200s but not S-ATA
Very few do Gigabit NICs
Big battery lifes tend to weight lots
And preferably a known brand - any thoughts?
Cheers,
mb
- P4+ CPU
- 7200rpm S-ATA disks
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Gigabyte+ memory
- XP Pro O/S (or greater, e.g. 2000/3003 server) as standard
- Graphics good, and including full dual monitor support
- Battery life 3 hours plus (ideally at full CPU/performance)
- Size not critical, but thin and light would be nice
- Fairly rugged (although not necessarily Toughbook standard)
- Gotta be a PC (sorry, no PowerBooks )

I wouldnt advise getting a laptop with a P4 chip. I have a Vaio with a P4 2.8 cpu 512Ram,and its not the fastest machine about. I would sugest finding a lappy with a centrino chip as its designed to be mobile wereas the P4 isnt, I have collegues that have Vaio's with 1.8 centrino chips 512Ram and there machines run a lot quicker than mine.
Edited - Spelling error missed off the nt on wouldnt whoops big mistake

Do you want your cake and be able to eat it mate?
To get anywhere near 3 hours on battery, a Pentium-M (Centrino) is going to win over a desktop P4 chip.
You could try the FSC Celsius H320. That's a:
Pentium M 770 (2.13Ghz)
2GB DDR2 RAM
80GB SATA HD
256MB ATI Mobility FireGL Video
Gigabit NIC
3.2Kg Weight
Another option could be something like the Savrow (Sav-who?) or the Rockdirect Xtreme Ti. Both of them weigh over 5.5kg though Would save on trips to the gym though

Another for a Centrino laptop and I've got both.
My 1.6Ghz Centrino lappy is a lot quicker than my P4 2.8Ghz lappy, plus I like the fact that just 60 seconds after pressing the power button on my Centrino laptop I'm online & surfing the net

ChrisB,
thanks for the pointers - the Fujitsu seems amazing on the bangs per kilogram measure, and with 7200 S-ATA plus big battery life (with extra) it look great .
As for the P4 versus Centrino - basically i am after the best laptop option (hence the "P4+" specification). Now if they did quad Xeon laptops (although RAID on a laptop is pretty impressive as well )
Basically we are after some **** hot laptops to demonstrate server level stuff in a portable environment. No need for mega (gaming) graphics, but all the other components need to be max. Normally they will be plugged into the mains, but the extra battery life is just in case.
Thanks for the great ideas,

If you are using a P4 processor, and are running the drive / processor etc hard with server software, then expect the battery life to be well under an hour...
