PowerDVD is good, as is WinDVD, both of which are un-free.

VLC Media Player is quite nice for playback of a variety of formats plus DVD and VCD/SVCD and it's free.

I take it you didn't get any free discs with software on when you got your PC/DVD ROM/RW drive? You tend to find a free copy of windvd or powerdvd on the disc.

The DVD drive came with the PC when we bought it (from PC World), the software was on the old H/D which packed up after 13 months. When I put the new H/D in I overlooked the DVD software when re-installing everything. The fact that I've only just realised 18 months further down the line shows how much I actually use it.

The only reason I do need it is so MrsD can watch the video footage of her day at Bill Gwynne's The all singing & dancing surround sound set-up in the lounge refuses to play it without jumping & freezing

What make of PC is it? If its an eMachine then PCSC will provide replacement recovery media for free on proof of purchase and Advent recovery discs are available form www.dsgrecovery.com for £5. If its a PB/HP/Compaq youre f*cked though, unless a store will copy the discs from their library (quite legal as you own a licence).
